When my kids are babies, they always sleep with me. I should start over. When my kids are teeny, tiny babies, most of the time they are in a bassinet right next to my bed, but somehow as they get a bit older, they migrate to my bed. (I know it mostly has to do with the convenience while nursing at night.) Now I know people are usually either very for, or very against "family beds" but I can be slightly paranoid about things like SIDS and babies sleeping in general, and honestly would be up every ten minutes to check if the baby was still breathing. I know it sounds strange, but there are certain things that really freak me out. I should also say, that both Tyler and Nate are great sleepers. The go to bed easily, own their own, and sleep, (with the exception of the occasional bad dream or bathroom trip) all night without a problem. Also, they have both been going to bed on their own since they were about a year and a half. What I mean by going to bed on their own is, falling to sleep by themselves. Of course I'll read them a book, tuck them in, etc, but they are awake when I leave the room. So for all the naysayers, yes I have the best of both worlds, I believe. My kids have not turned out to be overly dependent children with sleep issues. They are well adjusted. Brody can fall asleep on his own, but for now, he still sleeps in our bed. I enjoy it. I sleep better, he sleeps better. Everyone's happy. There are some nights though, like this past night, which make me wonder if we can make a bed bigger than the one we have now. I'm sure they will someday, but I need one now. We have had a king sized bed since right before Nate was born, and we need one for Nathan alone. Last night was fine, Brody woke up around 4:30 in the morning because he couldn't find his pacifier, but I found it for him and he was right back to sleep. Around 5am, Nate (who scared the crap out of Nathan) was suddenly standing right next to Nathan because he wanted some water. Since I take care of any night time Brody issues, Nathan takes care of any problems with the older boys, granted those are few and far between, but that system works for us. Since I was not quite asleep yet from Brody waking up, I heard Nathan get up and get Nate some water, have him go to the bathroom, and he let Nate come into our bed. After about 20 minutes of trying to get Nate back to sleep, he asked if he could put Nate next to me because he wasn't going back to sleep and Nathan had to be up early for work. I talked to Nate who informed me he was "starving" and told him I'd make him a big breakfast in a few hours but for now, he had to close his eyes and try and go back to sleep. At this point I debated on just getting up because it was a bit past 6, and I had to be up in a little over an hour for Ty, but I didn't. It was dark, and I was warm and comfy. Nate eventually went to sleep, and so did I. When I woke up, both of my arms were occupied by little heads sleeping, Nate had also thrown his legs over me, Brody had his arms over me, and I glanced over to see Nathan curled up, sans extra little limbs all over him and for a brief moment felt a little jealous. I slid my arm from under Nate, and quietly woke Brody up and snuck out of my room to help Ty get ready for school.
I can't help but wonder what it will be like with one more little one to add to the mix.
